We share 26 fun and nutty facts about Thanksgiving Day.

We’d like to take a moment and wish all of our readers a happy Thanksgiving. As we enter the holiday season it is important for us all to take stock and be appreciative for the good things in our lives. We also hope that our readers will take this time to remember our co-workers and friends who suffered employment and financial set-backs in 2009. We should all take a moment to find a way to give to those that may not be as fortunate as ourselves.

On a lighter note, we’d like to usher in the holiday season with 26 fun and interesting factoids about Thanksgiving. It may not be Pulitzer winning material but it ought to bring a smile to a few faces.

  1. Benjamin Franklin felt that the turkey should be America’s national bird.
  2. Thanksgiving was not a national holiday until 1941, when Congress declared ratified it.
  3. Females make a clicking noise not a gobble. The famous gobble is actually a seasonal mating call made by males.
  4. The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days.
  5. Macy's annual Thanksgiving Day Parade began in the 1920's.
  6. California is the largest consumer of turkey in the United States.
  7. Turkeys cannot see well in the dark.
  8. A group of turkeys is called a “flock”.
  9. On Thanksgiving Day 91% of Americans eat turkey.
  10. 50% of all Americans put the stuffing inside the Turkey.
  11. Turkeys were among the first animals native to the Americas to be domesticated.
  12. The Snoopy balloon has appeared in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade than any other.
  13. The retail value of turkeys in 2002 was approximately $3.6 billion. Projections for 2009 are expected to reach $3.8 billion.
  14. Turkeys sometimes spend the night in trees.
  15. Turkeys have excellent hearing, even without ears.
  16. Turkeys are categorized by age: “Fryers” are sixteen weeks old while “Young Roasters” are five to seven months old.
  17. In 2008 the 250 million turkeys raised weighed approximately 7.9 billion pounds
  18. A turkey can suffer a heart attack.
  19. New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual state custom in 1817.
  20. Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving Day second Monday in October
  21. In America, Minnesota is the top turkey-producing state.
  22. The NFL played its first Thanksgiving football game in 1934 with the Detroit Lions vs. the Chicago Bears.
  23. In addition to turkeys U.S. farmers will produce 709 million pounds of cranberries. The top producers are Wisconsin and Massachusetts.
  24. There are eight places in the United States that are named Cranberry.
  25. The first national Thanksgiving was celebrated when President Abraham Lincoln established the date in 1863.
  26. Every president since Harry Truman pardoned a turkey for Thanksgiving.
