Geek: Arkham Asylum Trailers Have Us Totally Committed ...
We love trailers for videogames. Check out why and see trailers for one of our latest favorites.
More and more people are comparing videogames to movies. It really is an easy thing to understand when one considers the skyrocketing development budgets and marquee names that modern videogames bring to the table. Here at Kung Fu Drafter think that this is an utterly idiotic notion. But that is the topic of another post. Maybe this weekend or maybe sooner. Or maybe later. We haven’t really decided.
What we have decided on is that there is one important thing videogames and movies do share in common. That would be trailers and we love them. Once it was only at the movies that you could watch trailers to get the look and feel of an upcoming production. Later, the little 30 second masterpieces were all the rage to advertise movies on television. Now we see the same thing happening for modern videogames.
The way that this new media has diverged from its origins is in the development of extended trailers. These new featurettes offer more than the 30 second “come buy a ticket” tease of days past. We’re seeing trailers that offer character insight, plot revelations and some truly fantastic cinematic renderings that run for several minutes. Where a movie may have had one or two trailers to advertise its opening, games today roll out an entire series of trailers to create interest.
Eidos' new Batman title is sure to be a hit ...
What are some of our favorite trailers lately? We love the trailers for the new Batman videogame “Batman: Arkham Asylum”. Take a moment and enjoy some of these videos and you might just find yourself ooo-ing and aahh-ing.
We love the use of this short format to introduce the villains, showcase the concepts and storyline. If you would like to view all 14 videos in the series be sure and visit G4’s Video Game Trailer page. We can honestly say that these fantastic videos have made us definitely want to play Batman: Arkham Asylum. Of course it probably didn’t hurt that we were huge Batman nerds anyway ...

Kung Fu Drafter
This week we logged into Steam, which by the way is fantastic, and saw that Batman: Arkham Asylum will be available on PC in September 2009. We don't know how accurate that is because we hear that the PC version has been delayed. But that is neither here nor there. What this update is about is the demo that is available for the PC from Steam and the official site.
Of course we wasted no time in downloading this demo and checking it out. At first we were disappointed. Which, after all of our building excitement, was ... well disappointing. The combat seemed to be on rails with just alot of button smashing. The "detective" mode seemed idiotic and it sure seemed like we were killed awfully fast.
Once we got to understand two things the game became fantastic.
- Batman is not superhuman. He is extremely physical but relies on technology and can be killed.
- This is a stealth game.
At that point we were enjoying the game again and excited again. If you've been interested in Batman: Arkham Asylum then you should download the PC demo and give it a whirl. We think maybe we'll get a gamepad for the release ...
