Geek: Second Skin on the Big and Small Screens Free 'til 8/13...

We take a look at the great documentary "Second Skin" and tell you where to see it.

Second Skin PosterIf there is one thing that we love at the Kung Fu Dojo it is documentaries. Seriously, we just can’t get enough of them. Needless to say we turned our DVR’s to the History Channel and broke the knob off. While we love to watch shows on any topic from wheat to counterfeiting one of the topics we rarely get to see in documentaries is gaming. Especially concerning the phenomenon of Massively Multiplayer Online gaming. We don’t know if the whole topic is just too new or if it’s too geeky even for the History and Discovery channels. Of course all of that is until recently.

In 2008 Juan Carlos Pineiro-Escoriaza was able to debut his documentary, Second Skin, to the audience of the South by Southwest conference. This was a film, maybe the first, to take a serious look into the topic of what makes a gamer an MMO gamer. It’s a film focused on the effect of these games on the players who are devoted to playing them. And it is fantastic.

JCPE follows seven core players of games like EverQuest II and World of Warcraft through three different stories. Each story hones in on the human element and how these games facilitate friendships, relationship and, in some cases, even family. Roommates, friends, and recovering online addicts make up this view of the gaming world that so many "normal" people never get to know. All of this happens without passing judgment on its gaming subjects. The film doesn’t preach or condone. But it isn’t a hugfest either. JCPE doesn’t dote on the topic or try to foist it on the viewer. Instead he brings together a collection of real people, educated observations by “experts” and some insight for the other 99% of the world that is not into MMO’s.

So what is so special about Second Skin? It’s one of the few documentary films that we know of that is being released in regular theaters. While it isn’t the thousands of screens that High School Musical opens on, it is enough that some of the public will get a chance to experience it. If you can’t find a theater playing this interesting flick then you can just pop some microwave popcorn and sit in front of your PC. Until August 13, 2009 you can watch the entire 1 hour and 34 minute film online at Snag Films for free.

And our readers know how much we love free things here at Kung Fu Drafter. If you have even the slightest interest in the topic, the games or just good documentaries you cannot miss Second Skin. As for us, now that we are done with our post, we are going to go watch it again ...
