I'll reserve judgement until I actually have a chance to play around with one but I think Apple might be on to something. An appliance that keeps virtually everything that has made the iPhone a success (except it no longer fits in your pocket) and removes some of its biggest limitations (mostly related to the size of the device).
Having said that, the iPad is clearly not going to appeal to some people. Luckily there are many other devices to choose from -- and there will be many influenced by the iPad that attempt to correct its shortcomings.
The technical specs do not look to be anything special but the journalists that had a chance to use the iPad seemed to be impressed with its speed and responsiveness (including HD video).
