CAD+: One Blog, Five Posts, and 64 Bits of Useful ...

We look at some great posts for CAD professionals considering the move to 64-bit workstations.

Computer hardwareOur long time readers all know that here at Kung Fu Drafter we lead dual existences. We spend our workdays managing CAD drafters as well as hardware. But we also provide technical support to internal and external clients. Both are fulfilling roles, still it is sometimes hard to find the perfect answer when someone comes to you in search of a solution to their problem.

One of the most common issues that has arisen in the past few months is whether or not the clients we support should move to 64-bit operating systems or not. Of course, with all of the confusing marketing nonsense being put out by computer manufacturers it’s no wonder that people are at a loss. As our readers may recall, in a series of posts we stated our preference for 64-bit workstations. Now we have an even more thorough and current resource for our readers.

Screen captureGet the Jump of Civil 3D is one of our favorite blogs to read. Unfortunately, we are bad people, so we are pretty behind on our reading. That is why we are barely sharing the fantastic series of posts written by Tench Tilgham back in April. Yeah, well two months late is better than … three months. Or something.

Sure, we could reinvent the wheel and write our own series of posts on the matter, but we feel that Tench’s posts already cover the topic very well. If you’ve been sitting on the fence, wondering if your new CAD software (especially Civil 3D and other resource hungry apps) needs new hardware, then you can’t miss these articles. With tips to help understand the basics of hardware to which 64-bit OS is for you, Tench has an article for you! As long as you’re there, check out the rest of the blog for some great Civil 3D information.

With new software releases requiring more and more horsepower and efficiency from your workstation hardware, we think that 64-bit machines will soon be the norm in the CAD world. We hope that this tip on some great articles is useful to our readers out there that just haven’t been able to pull the trigger on those upgrades. If you know of some other great blogs with workstation information be sure to leave us a comment below …
