CAD: To Migrate or Not to Migrate, That is the Question ...

Moving onHere at Kung Fu Drafter there is a time of the year that we wait for like little kids in December. It’s a time when, very much like little kids, we get lots of new presents in the office. Naturally, we are talking about the time of the year when new software arrives at the office and gets installed. Oh sure the software is all digitally downloaded, but it’s still as good as brightly wrapped gift boxes.

So after we do the voodoo dance and make the sacrifices and necessary bribes to get IT on the job, we have newly installed software. This brings us to the impasse of which we are writing today. For you see, dear readers, the installation of new software brings us to the point where we make a decision; an important decision. That decision is whether we will migrate our settings and preferences from the previous release or start fresh. Decisions, decisions.

The Choice

Autodesk migration toolThis seems to be one of those topics that divide a drafting room right down the middle. Some drafters cannot help but bring along the settings and preferences that they know and love, ensuring that their new software works just like the old. Then there are there brave, adventurous, and handsome drafters who view new software as territory to be conquered. They stand face in the wind and ask, “Why would I want new software to behave like old software?” We will leave it to you to decide which camp we are in.

So, dear readers and friends, share with the group and tell us what you think. To migrate or not to migrate, that is the question. Leave us a comment below and tell us which side of the coin you fall on …
