It is just 23 days until the big shebang happens and Autodesk University (AU) begins in Las Vegas, Nevada! Here at Kung Fu Drafter we are all aflutter and ready to go to our fourth AU. Aside from the great sessions, it’s always fantastic to see friends from years past. Of course, not everyone is going to be a returning AU veteran. With an expected attendance of almost 8,000 people there are going to probably be more than a few first-timers.
We thought we would start a series of short, helpful posts for the first-time attendee. First on the list? Well packing, of course. No, not the packing that you do at home. Who are we to tell you which undies or socks to bring to Vegas? Nope, we are talking about packing for the day’s activities. You see the one thing that is going to mark you as a n00b faster than anything is over-packing. Toting that 30 pound backpack is not going to help anyone. Especially not your back or feet!
Resist the urge to bring the camera, the camcorder, 5 batteries, 30 memory cards, the laptop, an extra pair of socks, a cookie, and cash. Well, bring the cookie and the cash. But be judicious on the other items. A camera is a great thing, but unless you’re a pro, keep it to a simple point and shoot or even your phone’s camera. Laptops are great also, but unless you have a netbook or a tablet, bring a legal pad for notes. What about email? Again, turn to the phone. Wireless access shouldn’t be an issue anywhere at the event, so access the web on your phone.
Carry a Big Bag
Traveling light does not mean that you shouldn’t bring a bag. Of course, you can keep your phone and a small camera in your pocket. And carrying a legal pad is easy enough, but you are gon’na want a bag. Where else are you going to store that swag? Especially from the trade floor! You are going to be grabbing shirts, cups, books, gizmos, gadgets, and all manner of this and that. Your backpack is the perfect place for all those goodies. Luckily, it won’t be crammed full of heavy stuff so there will be room for the goodies.
This one tip alone will go a long way to making your first Autodesk University a great one! And your feet will thank us. Be sure to check Kung Fu Drafter for our next AU tip. Until then feel free to leave us a comment below with your own AU tips for first timers. Until then we will just keep our excitement level high and try to decide which undies and socks to pack …
