CAD: Autodesk Prepares for the March of the Androids ...

It seems that Uncle Carl, over at Autodesk, has been reading our diary because Sunday brought a subtle bit of news that has us all excited. No kidding, we are talking “stupid excited”. Like “eleven year old girl getting to meet Justin Bieber (who we suspect is also an eleven year old girl)” excited! What could have the stoic blogging professionals at Kung Fu Drafter frothing at the mouth, you might ask?

Four words:
AutoCAD WS for Android

Wait, does “WS” count as a word? The hell with it, because we say it does! That’s read dear readers who are not part of the Cult of Apple. Autodesk is finally releasing the long awaited Android OS version of AutoCAD WS! Now we too can enjoy the mobile CAD goodness that is liberating project files from the prisons of our desks and taking them to the prisons of our job sites. Who couldn’t be excited about that?

It hasn’t been a terribly short journey to get to this momentous occasion. Ever since we first heard of AutoCAD WS, Kung Fu Drafter has lobbied, pleaded, and wheedled to get information on an Android version. Let us tell you, that was some serious wheedling! But the good people at Autodesk remained a unified front of polite “uh uh”. Still, we posted, tweeted, and otherwise whined (sorry Noah and Shaan) for our beloved Android to be called up to the Bigs. Now it has happened!

Motorola Xoom: We Want It ...Autodesk could not have picked a better time to release the AutoCAD WS for Android. That is to say, announce the impending release. With new and more powerful Android OS tablets coming onto the market from the likes of Motorola, HTC, ASUS, and others there is sure to be no shortage of units to choose from. While constrained design works for iOS there is no doubt that competition will translate into a greater proliferation of tablets in the field for Android users. That means even more AutoCAD WS users fueling the movement of CAD for mobile devices. We think that is terribly exciting indeed!

Over at cad-monkey.net I have been rambling on about the lack of Autodesk apps on the android platform for quite a while. Our friends using iPhones have been spoilt for choice with the library of apps available to them from Autodesk.

Like yourself, I too have been annoying Autodesk at every chance about AutoCAD WS on Android, and I would imagine that the response I got were very similar to yours too.

I saw the post on Sunday and nearly ignored it... My spidey senses kicked in though and I clicked the link and read the good news. I had to check the date to see if it was April 1st!!

Hopefully Autodesk will not stop with AutoCAD WS and bring more titles to Android because I'm damned if I am buying an iPhone!
